Review on Brix Refractometer with ATC - Dual Scale for Wine Making, Beer Brewing, and Homebrew Kit: Specific Gravity & Brix Hydrometer by Mario Collins

Great tool for brewing whole grain

When I brewed my first whole grain beer I had some problems with the equipment and no experience and ended up with a low initial density but didn't know about it until the beer was ready and chilled was and I checked with my floating areometer. With this refractometer, I can see the progress of the mashing process and watch the increase in gravity, letting me know how things are going and when they're done. It also allows me to adjust the overall volume to reach my target OG. However, this applies to all refractometers. This one works fine (caution - I've only used it). Seems pretty solid. The indications are consistent. With just 2-3 drops, it is easy to apply and easy to clean. You have to twist it to adjust the focus when you first use it and then it gets a little longer and doesn't fit the foam in the case but still fits. I checked my numbers against my floating hydrometer (after temperature compensation) and they matched to within about 0.002, which is about as accurate as a floating unit - it's an easy read down to 0.001 SG. Looking forward to using it during fermentation to test completeness by just taking a few drops rather than a cylinder full of wort/beer. I don't know how well it's holding up yet, but I'll update if I ever have problems.
