I am traveling with a cat and needed a scratch mat that was easy to pack but had vertical scratch marks. It exceeded my expectations. My cat is trained to only scratch sisal but gets lost in hotel rooms. This rug can be laid on the floor, draped over the armrest of a chair, or wrapped around a furniture leg (e.g. a table leg) and fastened with Velcro to create a vertical scratching surface. This is absolutely the perfect solution for our needs.
