Review on πŸ”Œ Logitech Ultimate Home Harmony | Discontinued by Manufacturer by Tim Armstrong

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Early glitches have been fixed with the latest firmware updates. Not perfect yet, but already good.

I have used Logitech's top quality universal remote controls for many years. Initially, they were extremely programmable with a terrible UI to customize them. Lately they've gone in the opposite direction. You can no longer control every detail and delay of every function on the remote, but the user interface makes setup much easier than before. For most people, this is a big improvement. For control-mad fans, the new restrictions are just a minor annoyance. Overall I really like this remote control. This is the second model of this model that I have bought. I can use it to control my Nest thermostats, entire home theater system, Apple TV, XBox One and more. It also allows you to use your iOS devices as a very nice remote control. A few weeks ago I would have given this remote 3 stars for a number of reasons. Firstly, as shipped, the remote had firmware bugs that caused the entire battery to drain for 6 hours. Basically, I had to keep it charged all the time and only raise it for a button press or two. Second, it crashes regularly. When it crashes, the screen freezes and none of the buttons respond when pressed. In other cases, the screen goes black and cannot be recovered from the motion sensor. I would have to take out the battery for 30 seconds to reset the remote. A few months later, Logitech released a firmware update that required me to bring the remote and receiver upstairs to the computer to connect them. On both devices, my remote setup stopped working with my devices. I had to factory reset the remote and go through the setup process again. It was annoying. Thankfully, the hassle was worth it. Now the remote works for several days without charging. The new firmware also reduced the number of crashes from a few a day to about once a week. Additionally, the remote now updates over my network from the living room instead of having to plug it back into my computer. This is a solution, better late than never, which is why I gave the remote 4 stars instead of 3. The fact that the remote still crashes at least once a week is why it's not 5 stars yet. However, it's still one of the best universal remotes out there. My picky wish list for this remote includes dedicated buttons for TiVo, thumbs up, thumbs down, and buttons for streaming Netflix, Vudu, and Revain Prime. Services. It would also be nice to have two sets of labels on the colored buttons - X,Y,A,B for XBox One and A,B,C,D for TiVo. All of these features can be programmed on the touchscreen, but scrolling through all of the device's features on the screen can be tedious. I still recommend this remote but I would advise anyone who gets this remote to make sure you are up to date with the latest firmware on both devices before setting them up for your components. This will save you from the unspeakable headache that many of us suffered from when we started this model.
