Once I got used to HOB filters I never felt the need to spend extra money and time on a canister filter. However, I have read that canister filters are much better for planted aquariums as they don't disturb the water surface causing CO2 loss. This filter was very easy to put together, very easy to refill, completely silent and since I don't use a surface skimmer the surface stays nice and quiet. And the price is really unbeatable. The only complaint I had was resolved with a $15 rebate when the UV lamp did not come with the product as described. I later learned that this part would cost at least $25 to replace, but I didn't replace it because I don't think it's really necessary.
