Technically, this fountain does what it says -- sprays water as long as it's in direct sunlight -- but if there is even the faintest *hint* of cloud in the sky, a passing leaf, a bird sitting close enough that its shadow falls somewhere on the top of the fountain, or if it's any time of day when the sun is a little lower in the sky and not directly overhead, it will stop. Mine's in full sunlight for part of the day, but at certain times of day a high tree branch (as in 30 feet up) casts a very faint shadow across part of the birdbath, at which point the fountain spray becomes an intermittent spurt of water droplets followed by a long period of nothing. If it's later in the afternoon and the sun is not directly overhead, it also doesn't work.I suppose I've been spoiled by solar lights and other devices that store power in a battery for continuous operation, but I expected this to be able to continue running even if a bird flies by and casts a shadow for half a second. It doesn't.
