Purchased to scan barcodes on the back of gift cards for church fundraisers. Bought two scanners in case one fails at some point. Both worked great right out of the box. Very easy setup - just plug in the cable; one end into the scanner - the other end into the USB port of the computer. The software is initialized and the scanner is ready for use. I use Microsoft Word and Excel on a Windows 10 computer, but I think this feature is pretty versatile. Wherever the cursor is, the scanner enters the barcode value followed by a carriage return. The scanner will beep when the barcode is successfully read. Before using it, I read the instructions, but I didn't need it - the scanner is so easy! Beautiful design and execution. I recommend it.
