Review on ๐Ÿฏ Herbatint 9N Honey Blonde Hair Color - 4.50 fl oz by Christine Jensen

Revainrating 5 out of 5

No ammonia, but be careful!

I first bought two shades of Herbatint's ammonia free hair color (honey blonde and platinum blonde) to counteract the brittle effects of traditional ammonia hair dye. Excited to find an ammonia-free product, I didn't realize that there were four other potential toxins in this product: 1) Upon reading the label, I immediately noticed a high concentration of Propylene Glycol (the second ingredient from the top). Propylene Glycol is a cheap alternative to glycerin and is commonly used in personal care products to keep food moist. However, the active ingredient in antifreeze is actually propylene glycol! It penetrates the skin quickly and can cause brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities, as well as immunotoxicity, respiratory toxicity, and skin or sensory toxicity. The EPA requires people who work with this substance to wear protective clothing to avoid skin contact. A product review site called GoodGuide has identified the use of propylene glycol in this product as a moderate hazard. 2) Another toxin found in both shades is p-phenylenediamine (PPD), which can cause neurotoxicity as well as gastrointestinal and liver damage. , cardiovascular, hemo- and renal toxicity. The use of this substance is restricted in Canada. GoodGuide has also determined that this product is a medium level threat. Unfortunately I have read that all permanent hair dyes contain PPD and the only thing you can really do to avoid this is to use a semi permanent hair dye which Herbatint also offers and has a much higher rating. 3) Sodium hydrosulfite, found in both shades, can cause skin, eye and respiratory irritation. Interestingly, the GoodGuide website lists sodium metabisulfite as an ingredient in the above Herbatint hair dyes, which is also of medium importance. However, Sodium HYDROSulfite is listed on the boxes I bought. I wonder if Herbatint has recently been switched to a less irritating sulfite? In any case, any sulfite can cause irritation in sensitive individuals. 4) Resorcinol is present in at least a honey blonde shade that has been shown to cause cardiovascular and hemotoxic toxicity as well as endocrine disruption. With this in mind, GoodGuide has given Herbatint Hair Color Gel a 2 on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the healthiest and most environmentally friendly. Also, this product is NOT on certification lists like "Safe Cosmetic Pledge" etc. As mentioned above, Herbatint has other hair products that perform better. Sulfate (SLS) or isopropyl alcohol in permanent hair dyes. SLS is another cheap ingredient that's commonly used in personal care products, but it's one of the most irritating and dangerous ingredients, and isopropyl alcohol actually dries hair and causes hair breakage. instructions or product mix. The main difficulty I had while applying the product was that the HUGE gloves that came with it made the actual application a bit awkward and awkward. I would advise anyone with small to medium sized hands to use their own gloves. CONCLUSION: If all you need is an ammonia-free product, this is it! However, if you are looking for a more "natural" product with no potentially toxic or irritating ingredients, I would recommend looking for a hair dye that is free of propylene glycol and the other ingredients listed above. These products exist and I will continue to try them in my quest for a more natural product!
