I've only used jumper cables a few times in decades of driving experience, but when you need them, you need them. I have a very long truck and wanted to be able to jump between my truck and the car behind me so that was 25 feet short of where I could walk. I also didn't want to use 1 or 2 AWG because of the weight and space - 4 AWG should do if I give the vehicles a small charge before starting the engine. This also allows me to switch back and forth between my truck and camper when the camper is off the truck (e.g. jacking or to start the RV). Generator if power isn't enough.) Generally I ALWAYS have jumper cables in all my cars - I very rarely need them, but I'm a Boy Scout and I'm happy to provide; -)
