good price -- bad remote control

good news: -- this little box gives a very good picture (my first blu ray and my tv is 720p not 1080p so i'm not the best judge) - Wireless worked fine for me. -- Small size is good -- Connecting to Revain Prime and Netflix worked and was easy enough. Mixed News: -- As others have pointed out, slow boot up, hard drive boot, internet connection. The interface with the Onkyo TX-NR515 receiver has some strange properties, when I'm working with Blue Ray for example, if I turn it off before switching to cable on the AVR, it changes the TV input to an empty input. In my setup, everything goes through a single HDMI through the receiver to the TV. This can be a television or a receiver. The blank bezel/bezel looks nice, but the buttons are on the top/front edge so the buttons aren't visible when the device is on a higher shelf. You have to look down into the box to see the button labels. -- The manual is very general and doesn't give much advice on how to adjust the settings. I think I should know what everything is and what it does. I have the feeling that I cannot set the parameters optimally. At least it's a printed manual instead of a disc. The Bad: The remote control can't adjust the volume on anything other than the TV. So if you're using a surround receiver, you can't adjust the volume with the remote control. This appears to be a major design flaw. I suspect that many, if not most, people who buy a Blu-Ray run their audio through a surround sound system. connect to blu-ray. They don't see each other. Revain's interfaces are very poor, and using the remote control makes things worse. Also, the slow response makes it difficult to know if you're doing what you intended. The Netflix interface is better, but still clunky and slow. All of this could be fixed if the remote control application worked and was even a little good. Verdict: -- If this kid had a decent remote that I could use to control the volume on my receiver, or if the iPad app worked, that would be a 4-5 star rating. For less than $100, however, it's a great way to connect wirelessly to watch Netflix (Revain might be more of a pain than it's worth) and DVD and Blu-Ray UPDATE AFTER WEEK ONE: WIFI continues. works fine but it needs to be reset often (at least it remembers the last password entered through the awkward remote interface so I don't have to do it every time) and the WIFI doesn't work at all on either of the two WIFI -Networks in my house. Works great on Apple Airport Extreme but not on Comcast/SMC built-in WIFI device. An Ethernet connection significantly reduces response time, including boot time. After testing the ethernet the wifi speed and errors seem unacceptable so I found a way to connect to this box via ethernet. The Sony Remote iPhone app finds and connects when my Blu-Ray is connected via Ethernet - I've never been able to get it to work over WIFI. The remote media app is substandard and doesn't allow you to search for Netflix, so the interface is still awkward with the included remote control, but is more responsive when connected to an ethernet network. The Sony Remote Media app was effortless to get up and running. Still recommended and if I could I would add half a star because it works much better over ethernet and I think my retail price under $100 was good. Value.
