This is a replacement for the same unit that dispensed so much paint/plastic solvent that we never opened the box (and the temperature was 30F). The replacement didn't smell much at first, but we left it in the garage with the packaging open to blow it out. Our family is sensitive to any kind of air pollutants and cannot have such a gasification element in the house. After about 3 weeks and higher temperatures, my husband and I noticed an odor coming from the device. We're giving it another month before we decide to install it or throw it in the trash and switch to a brand that doesn't use such problematic solvents/paints/plastics.
