Crystal-clear aquarium turns into cloudy milk bubbles?

I literally followed the installation instructions. Within 5 minutes my 30 gallon tank was severely cloudy and milky. I could hardly see my fish? I'll remove the package immediately. The pack had a picture of the medium and they looked like small balls/granules. When I opened the package, the filter pack looked like it was filled with powder and not beads/granules? I do not know what's up. I have contacted API/MARS but have not received a response yet?
