This bowl can be used for many things on its own, but I really like using it as a set when draining food. I use it for beans, chopped or cooked veggies, and pasta. The colander is large and holds a lot of food. It fits securely in the bowl, I can just wash or drain the food in a colander and put it in the bowl while I continue to eat the rest of the food. The base of the colander sits about a quarter inch above the base of the bowl, more if I place the colander's handles on the sides of the bowl instead of pressing against the cutout where they should be. There is usually enough space for the water to drain off the food. It says this set is dishwasher safe but I hand wash mainly because they don't fit in my car but leave room for other bowls. and plates. The two pieces go well together for storage, and I have a couple of smaller bowls that fit in a colander to save closet space. I found it very handy to have a bowl to catch water when draining stuff. I am very happy that I have the set.
