I have an old 2008 Dell Dimension 4700 with XP in my computer room and have just upgraded my home network (for many of my other computers) from 10/100 to 1000 gigabit speeds as Comcast recently changed my plan from 100Mbps up to 250Mbps /s increased. The upgrades included a TP-Link TP-ER5120 gigabit router, Arris SB6183 modem, Netgear gigabit switches, and Cat5e cables wherever Cat5 was. CD and XP found the correct driver on the CD. As simple as possible lol. The Ookla Speed Test shows (in Firefox 46) a jump from 83Mbps to 306Mbps. Offer for $11.00! woo hoo!
