Best with saw dust rather than shavings.
I have this dust-collector hooked up to my table saw, where it does a very good job of reducing the mess. I also hook it up to my thickness planer when I have a lot of planing to do and have found that does a pretty good job; but the intake fitting where the hose is attached is reinforced by cross pieces that can obstruct the flow of shavings. Solution: take light cuts.
