Actually useful life-saving kit

My spouse is a trauma surgeon, I'm an ICU doctor. We selected this kit to keep in our car because it actually contains useful life or limb-saving things for Stop The Bleed scenarios, yet it doesn't consume too much space. Most "first-aid" kits made for cars contain things only useful for papercuts, skinned knees and headaches. This kit with a few additions, can actually save lives.Notice - we gave the included tourniquet a quick inspection and it seems fit for duty, though sometimes it's not until you actually use them that you find out the windlass handle plastic is cheaper than it looked. Check for yourself. The trauma shears are smallish, but that's fine as we want this to be a compact kit. What we added: a rechargeable head lamp (hemorrhage doesn't care whether the sun is up); a second tourniquet (two are one, and one is none); a two-pack of chest wound one-way vented dressings (what we used to call the "three-sided seal" for blowing chest wounds); a 2-strip pack of QuikClot gauze. From here, the next level up starts to consume a lot more space: cervical collars; a bag-valve-mask with oral airways. We're leaving that stuff, along with IV catheters and spine boards for the EMTs. So please don't be having an airway emergency when we pull over to help!

Pros
  • The detailed and thorough instructions included with the kit make it easy to use, even for those who have never dealt with emergencies before
Cons
  • The kit may not be adjustable for different individuals' sizes or needs
