I have a 10 year old red eared turtle, a 3-1 year old goldfish (4 inch) and 9 other 1 year old cheap sloppy fish. This filter keeps the water pristine without modification. I clean the media every two months and change it every two months. So. I install new media, then clean next month, then install new media again next month. Then repeat the cycle. at least for disposable media. Sometimes there can be 6 weeks in between because I work a lot, especially after the big tide here on the Texas coast. Carbon and bio media last longer, as many know. Conclusion. Definitely better value for money than Floval or other high quality filters. If you're not entirely happy with 1, just 2. You'll still be spending less and will certainly get better results at that point.
