I bought this device out of the many others because of its good reviews, reasonable price and features. I'd just moved into a new house and had artwork and shelving to hang and modifications to make. The old, tap, tap, tap stud finder method is just too chancy and doesn't locate wiring or plumbing. The amount of work to do more than justified the price of the finder.if it worked.I used the product as soon as it arrived. Fortunately I had a 9V battery on hand. My experience matches that of others' who reviewed it. You have to hold the finder dead upright and move it very slowly. Keeping the power button pressed at the same time as sliding the product across the wall is one of those walk and chew gum challenges. It's easy to relax your grip and then you have to recalibrate and start again. A switch lock would help but then if you forget to switch off you can go through a lot of batteries. All said and done, it's not super hard after a few tries.The leading edge of the detected stud doesn't seem to be quite there yet (early) when the screen lights up. When you reach the trailing edge the stud appears to be thicker than a planed 2x4 should be. The stud center ID on the other hand seems accurate and equidistant, so maybe the trailing edge detection is a bit late. To be certain I switched to METAL and located a nail and compared it to the reported centerline along the vertical. Looked good. I scanned the area for AC but nothing showed up. I haven't tried a known AC run yet, or a known pipe run.So far, I would recommend this finder to anyone except pros who depend on tools for a living. If I were one of those, I'd opt for the $100 finders on the basis that they're more accurate.
