Doesn't work on my stairs to the basement

There are 4 possibilities: I have ghosts, this thing is possessed, it's just set to turn on randomly, or a combination of the three. I tried using this with a light I had on my basement stairs and it would turn on at random times in addition to the appropriate movement. Also, it stayed on for more than a minute when it actually turned on. In my case it didn't work as advertised so I got one of those motion detector sockets. In the same place, it works as expected, only illuminating the stairs when someone approaches them. I suspect it might work better in a safe, closet or whatever.

Turn on the light when motion is detected. Automatically turns off after 1 minute if no motion is detected
