This light's motion sensor detects movement above or below the stairwell and the light turns on for about 30 seconds or less. so you never go up or down the dark stairs. There are two negatives to this: first, the light is too bright for such a small space, but I prefer too much light over too little, and during the day the light still comes on when motion is detected due to the lack of a photo sensor. . It's only 10W so I don't mind and the price was very low
