The tear-off collar works well.
If you're nervous about the tear off feature, I can confirm my cats have successfully escaped from the collar. The collar is never damaged when I find it and snaps in place instantly. Like other cat owners, I'd rather see them run away than suffocate. The design on the collar glows in the dark, but not so much that I would recommend it as an argument for a cat that can roam the neighborhood at night.
