I need to drain an oily/watery liquid. You don't have to, but with my small dog I find it softens her poop making it easier to pick up. I haven't done extensive scientific research on this, so see what works for YOUR dog. I wash out the oil-water liquid several times with hot/warm water, using my hand as a strainer, then serve warm. She's a bit picky about her food, but has been following nature's recipe for quite some time. one in cups like this one and in chicken/duck/turkey/salmon flavors. The price was good. You can find this brand at pet stores and some grocery stores, but it's a bit more expensive except for the occasional sale. Draining the oily/watery liquid also helps reduce the amount of it on my dog's muzzle coat, which can result in a temporary stain, maybe a little stickiness, or a little more food smell that lingers on it longer. She also likes Natural Balance Duck. and potato mix in jars. They come in a very small can size that is almost perfect for this. The other flavors of it aren't as good for their hard poop. She loves duck very much.
