All I've had before were plastic retractable holders. Those strings would snap or the plastic badge clipping would wear down and break over time. This has a metal retracting cable and the badge clip is made of rubber. There is no way this thing will break any time soon. I've already had it about six months and I can tell it will last much longer than any other holder I have had before.Edit: it's been nearly a year since I bought this and it has been going strong. The rubber badge clip shows no sign of wear, and the cable and retracting spring are as strong as the day I bought it. I know these come in a pack of 2 but I'm still on the first one. It's been so good to me I gave the 2nd away to a work colleague who has been using it equally as long and they love it.
