I got a white 4TB iMac for my Time Machine that ran out of 2TB of storage and had to delete about 15% of my earliest backups. Installing it on a 2017 iMac 27" was a breeze. I took the opportunity to run an AJA disk check (see photo below) and got a decent 156MB/s write and 165MB/s read. The bottom corner indicates however, pointing out the persistent write limitations of the SHR technology used in the ST4000DM000 5900 rpm integrated hard disk Appropriate use of this drive The only difficulty arose when it took 17.5 hours to use the existing 1.5- TB Time Machine database file to transfer from the faster 2TB LaCie drive to the Backup Plus Hub, which averages less than 24MB/s and illustrates the poor sustained write speed of SHR drives when doing many writes in a row Time Machine is finished, the amount of new material per hour is minimal for personal use, so it will work fine until it's up space is needed. Time Machine then selects the oldest backups that require a lot of typing, so it can take several hours. That should happen about once a year and I can afford it. I would NOT recommend this drive if you need to write long files to it often enough to slow you down or if you are using it in a RAID. It would be ideal in a read-only situation, like a music or video server.
