In a 3-wire installation, the yellow wire and the brown or purple wire only connect to each other, but not to anything else in your system. To find out if you need to turn counter-clockwise or clockwise, look at the back of the motor with the blades hanging down (not sitting on the ground and the blades sticking up). If you saw him sitting on his back on the floor with fan blades on top you would probably choose the opposite of what you want. As mentioned, once you figure out which direction it needs to turn, within 3 wires the other wires just get tied yellow and go nowhere.
