Review on Unbreakable Security: Kryptonite Kryptolok 990 9.5mm Combo Chain Bicycle Lock by Trae Joubert

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Anti-theft requires a secret fee half the cost of the lock, ease of use below face value

What annoys me the most about this purchase is when I read the fine print that multiple years of anti-theft protection requires an additional $30 (in addition to somewhat strict conditions). It's no insignificant fee, and it's already a pretty expensive lock; I find it grossly dishonest for a company to advertise that the locks come with anti-theft protection while hiding a substantial surcharge in the terms and conditions - they deserve a severe penalty for that. While cryptography cuts through semantic/legal hairs by arguing that protection isn't "insurance," it actually is. Basically, buying a lock gives you access to a strict but inexpensive theft insurance plan. Which is fine, but they need to say it clearly and openly. Protection is the main reason I bought a second lock at this price. That kind of secrecy really makes me wonder what they could do to circumvent the claim or if they could delay approval/enforcement if I ever have to file it. As for the lock itself, it's awkwardly heavy. but it certainly seems to offer good protection. I think it will deter most thieves, maybe even some with an angle grinder, but I'm no expert at spotting weak points in locks and haven't had a problem with mine yet. It's too short to lock my frame and rear wheel in place without too much fiddling, and overall it's a bit clunky and slow to use. Combo wheels don't spin as easily as they should and work better on nails. The My Club Utility Lock is much quicker and easier to attach to your bike. Returns are a hassle so I'll probably keep the lock to myself and sign up for theft protection as the lock seems pretty secure and the security will give me some peace of mind. , but the marketing dishonesty and somewhat poor user experience left this buyer with more mixed feelings than seems reasonable at a price tag of around $100.
