As a student, I wanted a voice recorder for a long time, but I never bought one. If I remember correctly, I was put off by the device's apparent mechanical complexity, the use of non-standard recording media in it - minicassettes, the need to run it on batteries, and the general lack of versatility. I think they used to be expensive too. This is my first voice recorder and seems to solve most of my problems at the time. Notable features of the Olympus VN-5000 DVR include: - no moving parts except for a few buttons - small size - long battery life - no physical recording medium required other than its own physical storage - moderately easy-to-learn controls - 3 quality levels of recording and , depending on quality of choice - 20, 50 or 300 hours of recording - voice activated recording - variable playback speed - date/time stamps on files - some basic file management (4 preset folders, files can be moved between folders) - and etc..., etc. Overall this is it Model a compromise between low price/simplicity and features/flexibility in favor of low price and simplicity. Since this is my first DVR, I like it that way, but more experienced or demanding users might not appreciate the inconvenient file management and the fact that it's impossible, at least in theory, to extract files from the device to some other form of storage ( but it can be done - see note below). I am very satisfied with this device. Between 4 and 5 stars, I chose 4 because while this inexpensive "entry level device" makes recording easier, it is not that good at managing and retrieving information already recorded, especially when there are many files stored. To transfer files to a computer, it is possible, but it may take a long time. To do this you need to: - Install Audacity on your computer (it's free to download). - Plug the microphone cable into your DVR's headphone jack and the other end into your computer's microphone port - all computers must have these cables and you can use either "green" or "pink". - Set Audacity to "record" and you simply "play" your file. - Check if the volume setting is correct before recording a long file. - Save the recording as WAV or MP3. File. This takes just as long as writing, but once it's done you'll have a file to do whatever you want with.
