Car detailing has long been a hobby of mine so I've used pretty much every product available and like to think I know what I need. I do. When I heard about Nanoskin clay substitutes I was dying to try it. Clay is expensive and wears out quickly, so the alternative is welcome. Here's what I found: This product basically works as advertised, with one major caveat. It definitely removes surface contamination from your paint and makes it as smooth as glass as clay. BUT - you should ALWAYS make sure it is well lubricated. If the lube isn't enough the rubber will leave what I can only describe as "slip marks" on the paint and your only option is to take some paint cleaner and buff it. Not a big deal if it's just the first step to the fullest and you plan on buffing/composing the color anyway, but it's confusing and can take time and effort if you just want a quick look before waxing. I've always used car soap and water with clay as a lubricant, but it doesn't seem to be enough to avoid residue. And I don't want to buy a special lubricating spray either, because that negates one of the material's greatest advantages over clay - its economy. I will continue to use it for some applications but it definitely hasn't replaced sound for me.
