I've tried a lot of mountain bike shoes, mostly expensive, high-end models. The Gyro Carbide with a mesh upper is by far the best I could find. I bought some gray models from NOS because the gray ones are out of production now. I like the gray color because I also use it for road biking and the heat of the sun is a big problem with black boots. Even my previous Shimano shoes had a split sole. Shimano is definitely one of the highest quality accessory manufacturers.
