Review on πŸ”Œ Gearmo High-Speed USB to RS-232 Serial Adapter with FTDI Chip – Plug-and-Play for Windows 10/7 (32/64bit) by Justin Torres

Revainrating 4 out of 5

These FTDI Chipset USB to DB9 Virtual Comport Cables work great with Windows 7 (64-bit)!

I need these to connect to my Rigblaster M8 digital interface and my Yaesu FT-1000MP Mark V ham radio transmitter to operate in digital modes such as PSK31, MFSK16, Field-Hell aka Hellschreiber and numerous other digital modes work. I've used the Prolific cables and drivers with Windows XP and Vista with no problems, but they didn't work with Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit). My computer froze after a few seconds when launching MixW, Ham Radio Deluxe, or the Digital Master 780 built into Ham Radio Deluxe, and occasionally gave me a blue screen of death that crashed the PC. As soon as I plugged them in (I had to buy 2, one for the Rigblaster CAT port and one for the Yaesu HF Radio CAT port), Windows 7 (64-bit) automatically found and installed the FTDI drivers, without a driver CD to use. Complete with cable and now everything works great! I am very happy with them and have returned to all digital modes. The only thing I didn't like about them was that the cord could be about 1 foot longer. I use them on a Dell 17R laptop (N7010) and can place them fairly close to the radio, but if I were to use them on a desktop I don't think they would do without a slightly longer cable than the one that comes in the box. here if I didn't have a CPU sitting on the same table as the radio. They probably won't be enough if you have to sit at the computer on the floor under the table where the radio is located. Revain has longer ones, although they are more expensive. I also had to purchase a DB9 Female to DB9 Female adapter to adapt the adapter on the HDMI cable to work with the Yaesu FT-1000MP Mark V radio as Yaesu is overkill and they use a 'male' " Have CAT Port Installed on Their Radios Every other amateur radio manufacturer has a CAT jack on their radios. I also had to buy a DB9 female to DB25 male adapter to use with an old West Mountain Radio Rigblaster M8. The newer digital interfaces currently available have USB connectors, as do USB connectors on most new HF radios. Additionally, you can now buy interfaces with your own built-in sound cards, reducing the need to run audio cables between the PC and the interface.

Pros
  • Serial Adapters
Cons
  • Black only
