Review on RegiisJoy Wireless Gamepad Emulators for Consoles by Timothy Harper

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A fun trip down memory lane, but it's all a bit clunky.

I'm a longtime gamer, but I have little experience with emulators other than a brief introduction to a MIME emulator in the late 90's. Given that, I wasn't sure what to expect from this console, but the price and the sheer number of games promised intrigued me, so I decided to give it a try. Here are my thoughts after playing around with it for a few days • Setup was easy. Just plug it in and turn it on. However, the controllers use AAA batteries, so I had to find a few. You must also remember to turn them off after use or you will drain a lot of batteries. • The user interface is nice but a bit clunky. You are presented with a huge list of games to choose from. It's not immediately obvious how to navigate the tabs, but once you get the hang of it, a search tab will appear, making it easy to find specific games. However, searching for a specific game can still be overwhelming. For example, the classic Donkey Kong has a few versions and about half a dozen fakes. Sometimes interface elements overlap, making it difficult to understand what you are doing. • Console design requires work. Although it is obvious what the various connectors do, in many places the distances between the connectors and the machine's body are too great. The connector holes should be cut closer to the correct size, or rubber/silicone grommets should fill the space between the connectors and the case. My son took out the SD card and when he thought he was going to put it back in, he accidentally put it in the space above the connector and in the case itself. Luckily we managed to get it released but it's not possible. • While many games are intended for multiplayer, few seem to be. Or we couldn't figure out how to make them playable for two players. It would be nice if the interface could group them somehow. • It's cool that more games can be loaded on the machine. My youngest son and I managed to get the car connected to the internet and it worked. But then again, this was not an easy operation. It would be nice if things like network setup happened when you first started your computer instead of hiding in the UI. • Number of games does not necessarily mean quality. There are some great games among the 8000, but finding them can be difficult. And there is a lot of that. (Like all Donkey Kong copies I've mentioned.) Overall I think it's a fun and interesting trip down memory lane for the price. But the interface, console, and documentation are barebones. With that in mind, you'll find some joy here.
