I bought the Michley LSS-505 for $39 in August 2016 to use as personal wear. I wanted a functional sewing machine while keeping costs as low as possible. What kind of sewing am I hoping for: tops and lighter bottoms, taking legs from medium weight jeans, sewing medium weight curtains, pillows as needed. First day of testing. So far I've tried on a couple of lightweight cotton tops and mid-weight jeans. My first reaction to the machine was that it couldn't handle denim. It's very easy. Today I worked on removing the legs of a mid-weight jean and found it very successful. I eased the tension a bit because the denim I used was a bit stretchy and I wanted the seams to stretch a bit and the material not to wrinkle. My jeans look great and it only took about ten minutes. I'm glad that this little machine seems to be able to do more than just light work. I will put so many photos because they always help me when I look at reviews. The machine can be battery or cord operated. There is a foot pedal and there is a knob on the front that can be turned to the low/off/high position to start the machine. It seems that without a pedal it would be difficult to control it. To engage reverse gear, you must hold it. I didn't find it difficult to use. The machine has a small built-in light. I didn't notice and was happy about it. I've noticed that the light flickers when I first step on the pedal, which can be distracting when sewing short pieces at a time. The only thing I would mention is that the plastic bottom spool cover is a bit tight to put back on and I found that pressing the cover down while sliding it in allowed it to snap back into place.
