This is my first experience with machine embroidery and the Brother PE550 is a lot comfortable to use, and I found it incredibly easy to use. I've uploaded the files I bought online, changed the colors of the files, and made professional looking gifts, and I've only had them for two months. I have also used it for applique. I LOVE touch screens. I'm still learning about stabilizers and tweaking them for different types of fabric, but the machine itself works great out of the box. My only warning is once you see how easy it is to use and how many cool things you can do, you'll want to take on bigger projects than the 4x4 can handle. I haven't yet learned how to make multiple hoops to make a larger project, but I know it's possible in the future. I highly recommend this machine to all beginners!
