Review on Cisco Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless G Broadband Router by Devin Jenkins

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Third Linksys router in three years

This is an attractive, stylish, low profile wireless router that blends easily into the background, even at night. The indicator lights aren't too bright, it's quiet and functional. It was very easy to set up, we quickly started the service. The supplied DVD ensures foolproofness. We have little traffic with three laptops and one wired computer using the device. We haven't had any speed issues (sorry FIOS, your DSL line is still instantaneous and too good to switch due to the cost increase!), and we had to reboot the device once (since purchase) to restore the connection last weekend to make after a heavy snowstorm. The real test of this router will be the time it offers uninterrupted operation. The last two Linksys WRT routers I bought had connectivity issues that required calls to Linksys Technical Support and a lengthy reset process (IP address change, software reset, reconnection) within the first 6 months of operation . each time an expensive event, ie 45 minutes to two hours depending on the country/skill level of the technician receiving the service call. These have usually been lengthy and frustrating efforts with no lasting results. Each time I called back two or three days later, although there have been cases where the same problem reappeared after a few weeks. Repeat the process several times until the one-year warranty expires. Linksys account managers offer you the option of purchasing a service plan for approximately $5 less than a new device that covers six technical events or six months of technical problems, whichever comes first. Since the same technical issues kept popping up every time I called tech support, I decided to buy this new device. However, not a single call to customer service is required. I hope that "this fast, low-impedance router” will power households for the next five to ten years. And yes, my router is connected to a network filter! I look forward to next year, when I won't even remember that quiet little block humming seamlessly in the background. I'll let you know if this goes against the trend or will follow in 2011!

Pros
  • There's something special about this router
Cons
