The unique colors and patterns really add to the fun of these blocks. The blocks have an added element of visual interest and a nice texture to the hands. It's great for parents when your gender is covered in something other than the usual primary colors or blue for boys and pink for girls for a change! The smaller "bridges" (rectangles with a semicircle incised) seem to be too small for the cylinder (if you connect 2 "bridges" around the cylinder to form a square, there will be a tiny gap in the square, only about 1mm), but that may be for design reasons - once you put them on they stay securely in place! You can use them to connect multiple cylinders or create a platform. There are also squares with holes in the middle that can serve the same function.
