Not what I was hoping for

I would give up now even though I thought it was a good deal when I bought it. This works pretty well, but you're stuck with an old Asus firmware. I like the full-featured ASUS control interface. It does not work at 5GHz with 80MHz bandwidth. With this setting, the signal comes and goes. But with a bandwidth of 40MHz we get very fast downloads and a pretty good range. 2.4 GHz is ok (but much slower). I am glad that the MAC address filtering works in the WLAN (frequency bands 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). I followed the AC68U upgrade instructions and they worked. Mind you, if you don't have a working router (it was a replacement for a broken one), this is going to be a problem. I'm lucky enough to have two PCs, but even a Raspberry PI or two works except for the WinSCP part. I think you could probably work around this if you had to. Update: I found that I cannot update the firmware. The router sees that new firmware is available, then one of two things happens: if you let the router try to get it, it says it can't connect to the ASUS servers (it already did and can it yet), or if you download Unzip the driver and try to update the firmware from local storage. A message is displayed that the update failed. This raises concerns that a WiFi vulnerability discovered in late 2017 cannot be patched on this hardware.
