The SO-239 connector does not match my coax cables

Two cable ends - SMA male and SO-239 UHF connector. SMA connector is ok. However, the SO-239 connector cannot be used. I honestly don't understand how this is possible, but my PL-259 connectors don't fit in the middle of the SO-239 connector. I've tried several coax cables and adapters and none of these plugs fit this SO-239 connector. The center hole of the connector is somehow the wrong size. ID card is too small.
