I saved $300 in labor at the Ford dealership by purchasing this $40 OEM part and installing it myself after the dealer told me the tensioner was defective and cost me $400 offered for exchange. This was very easy for me to install as the tensioner only has 1 bolt and is readily available on the Ford Crown Vic. All you need is a 3/8" socket and a 1/4" ratchet. .2- Now that the tensioner is free of the serpentine belt, use a 3/8 socket wrench and ratchet to loosen the single bolt holding the tensioner (note the location of the old tensioner so you know how to position the new one). )3-After removing the old tensioner, install the new tensioner in the same manner as the old tensioner. I recommend applying threadlock around the threads of the bolt before reinstalling. The recommended torque is 15-22 lb-ft but I used only thread lock and torqued the bolt moderately but not over tight as the bolt is aluminum and could break. So a little tighter than by hand, but not too tight. The thread lock prevents it from loosening. 4- Return the V-ribbed belt to its original position and then use the ratchet to pull the tensioner aside so you can reinstall the V-ribbed belt. Make sure that the V-ribbed belt runs correctly. If you don't remember, look at the picture in the engine compartment, if there is one, or the owner's manual. Also make sure that the V-belt on all the pulleys is tight and does not fall off after the engine has started. 5- Start the engine and be ready to shut it down if you make a mistake. Risk. Always consult a certified mechanic to replace this part if you feel unqualified.
