Love it (although it broke)

We have 4 older ones and a gate (every other brand and style) which we accumulated when our older children were toddlers. But as we have a new baby in our family these new Munchkin gates were purchased to replace the completely worn out ones. Installation was easy, and the cups that hold them to the walls are tightened with a real wrench (a small one is included). with a gate) rather than turning the handle by hand - this wrench-tightened version is MUCH better than a handle with a handle in my opinion. This makes it easier to adjust and sticks to the wall much better. The gate closes very tightly - it's the only gate we have that latches both top and bottom. And they open very easily - much easier than any of the 4 different gates we've been using for years. Simply wrap your hand around the top and bottom of the top bar handle and squeeze. We love it so much we bought a second gate within a few days. BUT they broke less than a week after receiving them. The pin that keeps the bottom closed (see attached image) no longer retracts when we press the handle. So when we tried to open the gate, the bottom pin kept the gate closed even though the top latch was unlocked. We had to force the gate open and temporarily lock the pin in the retracted position to use it. We called Munchkin and they offered to send us another goal of comparable value. Turns out that gate we just bought is actually no longer made. We selected a new model on their website and received it within a few weeks. But when we installed the alternate version, we didn't like it as much as the broken model it replaced. The handle on the emergency gate was much more difficult to operate (press the buttons on either side of the handle then push down) and the downward pressure required to open it resulted in the underside of the gate rubbing against the frame. SOLUTION: In the end we decided to reinstall the broken gate and cut off the pin holding it closed at the bottom (it only took a pair of wire cutters to cut off the thin metal rod and its plastic cover). It now just snaps to the top of the gate but is no different than any other gate we have including the replacement gate we received as a replacement. We can't find any difference between this broken gate with a clipped pin and all the others we have, other than the fact that we still like this one a lot more. There is another problem: in the bottom corner of the gate. , there are two plastic latches that can be rotated to prevent the gate from opening one way or the other. It's probably great at the top of the stairs where you don't want it opening up the stairs to the outside. But the piece of plastic (see the gray oval piece in the attached picture) holding the two tabs comes out very easily from the bottom of the gate. At both of our gates, we threw the gate open, accidentally kicked a piece of plastic, and it flew across the room. We didn't remove part of both gates because we don't need to prevent them from swinging in either direction, but it's worth noting that these parts don't hold up very well. use - one with a pin on the bottom and the other without. We love them, broken or not. If I had to do it again I would buy it again.
