Very pleased - Saddlebags

I scratched my head a bit trying to figure out how to attach it. I didn't know exactly how to determine which side was ahead. Note: Installed on XR400. There is a guide with pictures but I'm still a bit confused. I have an aftermarket luggage rack and it's a good spot to mount the rear mounts, although the included fender mount would probably fit (I haven't tried). . I think I would have trouble finding the right place for the lower bracket on a standard bike, but I have rear passenger pegs (brackets are welded to the subframe and the pegs are bolted to the brackets). These passenger pegs proved to be perfect for this mount. I really don't know how to properly and securely mount it without them. Bags rest against my plastic sidewalls; The muffler side gets quite warm but doesn't melt and I don't seem to need a heat shield. And I'm not worried about new scratches on 24 year old plastic. I'm getting older (I'm in my 70's) and carrying a heavy backpack with all my stuff is too heavy for my back. I loaded some into the tank bag but found I needed to unload more. The pockets hold my 4.5 liters of water (1.5 liters in a flexible bag), tools and groceries well, and I could probably stuff in a little more. But that's enough. I still have to carry my hiking shoes in my backpack; My size 14 has a hard time fitting alone and also with water bottles (although maybe I could fit a small water bottle in each shoe). I enjoy riding more because with less weight on my back I can ride more like I should (over obstacles etc) instead of riding like an old man. It can be a little uncomfortable if I'm in the back and on the front strap (I have a rear fender strap just behind the seat). Since I don't travel long distances, that's not a problem for me. But others may have problems. I did a quick research by placing the strap UNDER the seat. It's not natural, but it might prove workable. But for me it's not worth it. I have problems getting on and off the bike. This adds a little more difficulty as the pocket on the other side can snag my boot a bit. This can be improved with better technology. But the problem is minor. I don't even know if it's there while riding (except on my butt when I slide back). No water experience yet (I don't ride in the rain or cross deep water anymore) and I don't fall. Conclusion: I'm glad I did; no immediate quality problems; helps a lot; I'm glad I didn't buy a more expensive bag that's half the size.
