Extremely Reliable Pumps

A few years ago we had 22 inches of rain in 9 days and declared our area a disaster area. Flooded basements and septic systems were everywhere. As the rain started the pump in our French drain failed and after cleaning and drying I installed a drain pump in the basement. We had two different contractors, one did the dry well and the other installed the sump and pump. I didn't know anything about the pumps at the time, but it struck me that both pumps, installed by different contractors, were M53s. I don't think this is a coincidence. These things are incredibly well made and totally reliable. What can fail prematurely is the switch. These are readily available from Revain and if the pump is not submerged they can be field replaced. While I don't have to do this, I have one handy and it's a few simple steps. Zoeller recommends changing the pump every 7 years, I every 5 years. The installation is very easy. Connect a 1 1/2" male thread to any pressure pipe, mount and align the pump, make sure nothing is touching the float and plug it in. Don't forget the check valve and drill a stamped 3/16" hole (mentioned more than once in the instructions). That's it. Unlike most pumps you'll find on the market, Zoeller has a full parts list should you ever want it. I doubt that I'd go that far, but keep a third brand new one in the box on the shelf along with the spare switch I mentioned That's just one of those things I don't want to mess up in the spring thaw and then have to look for somewhere. The pump also comes with a 3-year warranty.
