self test trust their quality and installability. I recommend following the instructions provided and not based on how the device was plugged into the previous outlet. I did it the first time and it wasn't connected correctly, but when the green light didn't come on and I couldn't reset it, I realized I had connected it wrong. There were only two wires to connect to the first socket, so fixing my mistake was pretty easy. The second outlet I had to plug in had four wires and I thought I followed the instructions correctly, but it turned out I had to swap two white wires with each other and also two black wires with each other. The directions are correct, but you need to pay attention to how the socket looks in the directions - it's upside down (like the picture on Revain) so everything needs to be flipped (although the black one on the right is also white). I swapped them out and the green light didn't come on at first BUT I reinstalled the outlet and the green light came on. Since these are patio outlets, I added a waterproof outlet cover to keep water or other debris out of the outlet. If I hadn't screwed it up, it would have taken about 10 minutes to install each outlet. Always turn off the power at the outlet in the electrical box.
