Covers fairly well and keeps you dry and ventilated. Good ventilation and protection is why I prefer a poncho to a raincoat. However, high winds and heavy rain will keep you crouched down until the blow is over. The material is quite strong and with the grommets this makes a nice lightweight awning and rain cover (you need to make sure you close the canopy). But as a normal camping tarpaulin it is not enough. I wear it on hikes and day trips. Sometimes I also take an ultralight hammock with me on a day hike. With it I can protect myself from the sun, wind or splashes. But again, this is a 'have it when you need it' item, not an everyday use item. Something for a "Get Home Now" EDC or a "Light Out" bag. I believe. I really do not know it. But for those of you who depend on a 99 cent plastic poncho. NOT NECESSARY. It would be MUCH better.
