Review on Graphic Liner Needle Point Drawing by Doris Tran

Great Pens: Drawing

As a big fan of drawing pens, I love trying new pens that come my way. These pens intrigued me because of the "needle point" rollerball, thinking they might serve my clumsiness in writing and drawing well. In that regard, these pens did not disappoint. I like the feel of their firmness both in the hand and when gliding across the page. Yes, it seems to me that when writing and drawing, they slide across the page. Sometimes I feel like other pens scratch and pull the page when I use them. Again, most likely because I write with a heavy hand and prefer paper with few teeth. I like that the ink is very black and offers good coverage. I work a lot with optical and stencil patterns and dark colors and full coverage is important. The ink dries quickly and doesn't smear, at least not on art paper. This doesn't work as well on cheap, flimsy paper (like stickers) where I've found larger tip sizes tend to bleed and bleed. I've also found that large pen sizes in particular don't always produce a consistent line, but I find that this is true for a large number of pens. The graphical liner offers plenty of links and a fairly consistent, smooth flow. The tip of the needle won't bend, fray, or catch on jagged paper. It contains archival, waterproof and fade-resistant pigment inks. It comes in 6 pen sizes, which are reportedly comparable to other artists' pens. But that's not all. While Ohto pens use standard sizes, the actual pen sizes associated with that size do not match other drawing pen sizes currently on the market. For example, the tip dimensions of the Sakura Micron pens correspond to the actual line width. Ohto pens, on the other hand, produce a line that is thinner than the pen size. This is probably due to the different pen styles and ink release systems. I have included two charts showing the dimensions and performance of the Ohto Graphic Liner and one comparing them to the dimensions and performance of the Sakura Micron Pen. Ohto's graphic liners work well and I'm very satisfied. You will never get such a fine line with these pens as you can with Microns or some other drawing pens currently available. But for me it makes up for it with overall coverage and a solid feel. I use these pens for both drawing and writing. In fact, due to the soft feel and glide, this is the only set of my drawing pens that I also enjoy writing with.
