Review on Philips LED 463216 Equivalent Light Bulb by Jennifer Dunn

White LED flat panel light with cheap inefficient dull orange plastic bulb

I was hoping to use this Philips bulb at night as it emits melatonin protecting light with no blue. I'm currently doing this with yellow/amber LED strips, LED chips specifically designed not to emit blue and making good use of the yellow/red end of the spectrum. Type 105 Theater Gel Filter (available at theater lighting stores, not Revain, sigh). The filter blocks blue light and provides an optimal spectrum, but the blue light energy heats up and slowly discolors the filter. This orange Philips party light starts with 13 white LED chips on a flat surface (perhaps a penny or two cheaper than the effective amber) and runs them through a less efficient translucent orange plastic hemisphere glued to the top. Due to the thick, low-tech plastic, they are MUCH dimmer than my home-made filter lights. It would be much more efficient to start with orange LEDs and use a thin translucent cover. Eventually I'll find a use for the other orange filter tubes I bought, perhaps by prying off each orange plastic hemisphere and placing a Lee 105 plastic filter some distance away. above the LEDs. This is risky - the emitter surface is HOT and the high voltage wires are exposed on the front when the hemisphere is removed. I haven't used orange bulbs long enough to measure durability, but they get very hot at the base, and heat is the enemy of electronic life. On my infrared thermometer, the thin bulb at the base reads 25°C, while these orange bulbs run at 40°C in a 23°C room. Each 10 degree Celsius increase typically cuts the lifespan in half, so the lifespan of an orange bulb can be 1/3 that of a "cool white" bulb. I might use them for summer 2021 parties if enough of us survive COVID. I hope to survive the lightbulbs. ---By the way, you can use the CD or DVD tracks side as a cheap spectrometer and see for yourself. When you bounce light off a source and tilt the Just So disc, the light splits into a swirling rainbow. White light from the sun or an incandescent lamp produces all colors, light from an LED or fluorescent lamp produces bands of color. If you see a small blue band in the spectrum, it means the spectrum contains blue light, which can interfere with melatonin production at night.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Requires socket
