I bought these 3-way speakers to use as surround back speakers. Photos underestimate their size. To install them, you have to cut an awfully large hole in the drywall. One of the reasons I bought these speakers is the "paintable grille". And while it's technically correct, painting the grille leaves a white frame around the speakers. Fortunately, the speakers are attached to the frame with six screws. If you remove them, you can remove the speaker and simply paint the plastic frame along with the grille. I used a can of 2$ black paint and it was done. You look great. In most homes, the studs are spaced 16 inches apart. So if you cut a hole in the wall, you'll have about two inches of space on each side. After securing the template to the wall and making sure it was straight, I used Rotozip to cut out the drywall (prepare for a mess!) that sits flush with the wall. Don't let your wife see the hole in the wall until the speaker is installed as it will look huge. the speaker is rotated. I used an electric screwdriver with a long bit to get at the screws. When you do this, WALK SLOWLY. As soon as I felt resistance on the speaker, I let go of it. Before you plug the speaker into the wall, make sure all the tabs are vertical - this allows them to "turn outward" (it makes sense if you do this). You can mount the speaker with a screwdriver (manual or electric) but I would be careful with a drill as these tabs break fairly easily under stress. If I were just looking at the sound I would give these speakers a 5/5. Don't let the price fool you - they sound great. The inlay installation system prevents them from vibrating or rattling. I gave the speakers one star because one of them arrived with the tongue already broken off and I didn't realize this until after I started painting them and it was too late to return them. My only concern is that if the speakers ever stop working, I'll either have to replace them with the exact same model or learn how to do some serious drywall repairs.
