Review on Hamilton Beach Silver Coffee Urn and Hot Beverage Dispenser: Brew Up to 45 Cups of Delicious Joe! by Sam Lund

Easy to use but with a few caveats

I bought this to serve coffee when we have large gatherings at home. The bottom line is that it does its job, although I have some issues with it. Let's go through the pros and cons: Pros: 1) Easy to use. It literally consists of four parts: the urn, the central tube, the coffee grounds container and the lid. Making coffee is as easy as peeling pears: pour cold water, pour coffee grounds into the basket, close the lid and connect to the network. That's all.2) Brews coffee quickly. We made a full batch of 42 cups and the coffee was ready in about 45 minutes, which is in line with the instruction manual's estimate of about a minute per cup. 3) Heat resistant handles make it fairly easy to move the urn around when needed. (but see my caveat below). Cons/cautions: 1) While the handles are heat resistant, the rest of the urn is not and it gets hot - definitely hot enough to burn someone. If you move it during use, you must be careful to keep your fingers only on the handles and not bend inward to touch the metal. If they do, you will know about it immediately. If you leave this for guests it would be nice to have a sign next to it advising it's hot. I don't want to sound paternalistic, but you know. 2) The faucet is slightly raised from the bottom of the urn so you really can't pour out the last drop of coffee. Not critical, but worth mentioning. 3) Brownish streaks appeared inside our urn, which we noticed after the first use. They won't be removed by vigorous brushing either (which at least reassures me that this substance doesn't end up in someone's drink). I photographed this discoloration so you can see what I mean. I am not dissatisfied with this purchase but there is room for improvement.

Pros
  • Fast brew, only takes 1 minute to brew each cup
Cons
  • No instructions
