My 5.3 LS has 240,000 miles on it. Oil collects on every surface. This includes the oil gallery where the rod is installed. Use the screw to remove the stock plastic shaft. Then, with the bolt still attached, use it as a plunger to clean the gallery with Brake Clean. Spray, dip, clean, check linkage fit and repeat. With each cleaning, the rod moves further into the gallery until it is finally flush with the surface of the stone. I would avoid the drilling method as it can permanently re-drill the gallery. Also, a drill this size is expensive if you don't already have one.
