There are birds of prey in our area so we feel safe with a long leash when our 18lb Jack Russell is outside. He's not a big dog so the stake holds up well in our grass and the leash is very strong but not too heavy for him. On the beach we only used a rope so he could walk, not a stake because it probably wouldn't hold up well in the dry sand.
