I have worn a full wetsuit for kayaking in cold water but this suit is bulky and tight and very difficult to get outside when nature is calling. I wanted to try a two piece solution and these pants fit perfectly. I found the material to be just the right thickness to keep me warm without being too restrictive. I also found that they sit VERY high above my waist. In fact, the back is very high, so it lifts about a third of my back. It's perfect for sitting in a kayak as the extra height means I'm not left with my skin exposed. Overall I would highly recommend these pants for kayakers (or canoeists in cold weather) but I'm not sure how to use them. for other sports.
