Review on ๐Ÿ”ง High-performance Melling M360 Oil Pump for Ford 5.4L Modular Engine - Efficient Lubrication Solution by Tony Doolittle

Revainrating 5 out of 5

You absolutely need this for your Ford 5.4L. Do what Ford should have done.

An absolute must for any Ford 5.4 liter 3V engine. I used this in a 2005 F-150 and will definitely use it again for my next timing job. You'll want to have an 8mm flex-head ratchet wrench handy for those hard-to-reach oil pickup bolts (unless you dropped the oil pan, which isn't necessary). I installed it at the same time that I replaced the complete timing kit, cam phasers, variable valve timing solenoids and all 24 hydraulic lash adjusters and all 24 rocker arms. If you do the same job I would recommend everything I just mentioned as a must have. The engine I was working on had a cracked rocker arm that damaged the camshaft and dropped the intake valve. So yes, make sure you make those rocker arms and lash adjusters on one of the worst engines ever. The original oil pump is the primary cause of premature phase shifter and valve train failure. This M360 pump is a large displacement pump designed for the Ford GT and GT500 supercars. Now I see that Melling also offers the M360HV pump. Filling the oil system is also difficult because it is a crank-driven pump. I removed the back cover of the pump and filled it with Lucas oil stabilizer and filled the intake pipe with it. I knew I would start it in about 2-3 hours after putting everything together. I turned off the injectors and ignition and increased the oil pressure fairly quickly while watching the oil pressure gauge. Fuel and spark back on and it ignited quickly as expected.
